Sakuna: Of Rice And Ruin Sells Over 500,000 Copies In First Month
Updated: Dec 1, 2020
XSEED Games and Edelwiess’ action platformer/farming simulator hybrid Sakuna: Of Rice And Ruin has sold a massive amount, according to the company’s Vice President Kenji Hosoi. Hosoi says that the game is one of the highest selling games that the company has ever produced, selling to the tune of 500,000 copies since its launch on November 10th. What’s more, a majority of the game’s sales have come from its Nintendo Switch version, which the company had to be coerced by Nintendo into releasing.
When asked by Siliconera, Hosoi said:
“Initially our plan was to release on PC and PS4 only, but after Sakuna was announced as being in the works, our Nintendo contact at the time reached out to us on more than one occasion to consider releasing the game on the Nintendo Switch as well.
We were initially hesitant on the first few reach-outs, as it just was not part of the original plan and we would have had to reschedule everything, but after multiple talks with Nintendo and hearing how passionate they were about the game, we ultimately decided to release the game on the Switch as well.”
Hosoi goes on to say that the Switch version outsold the PS4 version 2-to-1.
Sakuna has been a critical darling ever since its release, boasting a Metacritic score of 81 with at least one perfect 100 from various outlets. In the game you play as Sakuna, a harvest goddess who has been banished to a land overrun with monsters. Sakuna has to relearn her fighting ways to protect the lands as she farms them and finds her place in the world.
Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin is available for $39.99 on Steam, Nintendo Switch, and PS4.
