The story of the day comes as Respawn Entertainment's Apex Legends has apparently stolen the character likeness of Hunter from NOWWA's Bulletville. We covered Bulletville in one of our previous issues, and noticed the similarities immediately. This doesn't look like it was a goodwill mistake, and now NOWWA is speaking out.
Apex Legends announced their new character, Fuse, as a Season 8 legend. You may notice he also sports a robotic hand, eyepatch, leather outfit with side holsters, similar facial hair, and even the same haircut. The similarities are uncanny, this prompting NOWWA to immediately speak out about the design.
Bulletville's Hunter has been the face of the game for nearly two years, long before Respawn Entertainment created Fuse, who had a concept nearly a year ago that bears no similarity to their design now. You can see a photo of the character just to the left.
NOWWA gave a statement to Nintendo Life where they expressed their concern about being ripped off by a video game titan like Apex Legends,
"We are happy that the Apex Legends team liked Hunter’s style to the point of wanting to recreate it in Apex Legends - we were even hoping for an eventual crossover!" NOWWA said in its statement to Nintendo Life. "Nonetheless, we are afraid that, as a small indie game producer whose game hasn’t been launched yet, we’ll be called a ripoff of Apex Legends, which is certainly not true."
Below you can see the photos of the two characters.
Respawn Entertainment has yet to respond to the accusations. Usually, when we hear about a situation like this we hear how the indie studio ripped off the AAA studio. My my my, how the tables have turned.
We have reached out to NOWWA for a Q&A on the situation and they have agreed. We will share their responses once they are finished.
This is a big deal for indie studios, and probably, happens more often than not because they don't think they'll be caught! We'll let you know more information as the story develops!
